Here she is!

It's a girl! For those of you who can't tell what in the world this is supposed to be, she is laying on her back looking up. It's a profile shot. Her stomach is the black oval in the middle of her abdomen - you can barely see ribs above it. Her arm looks a little out of place, but it's sticking up. One of the pictures the ultrasound tech took had her hand right up to her mouth. Too cute. Of course, we were given these photos on a 3 1/2 in. floppy disk. Now I just have to find a disk drive for those. Ugh.
When I walked back in my parent's house after the appointment, Rachel asked very excitedly if it was a boy or girl. I asked her how she felt about another brother. "NOoooooooo..." Was the reply, so I told her that was good since it was a girl. She screamed and was so excited she even had Daniel cheering that it was a girl! He didn't say those words, of course, but he was cheering. We will have to remind him later in life that he really was excited to have another sister.

Yea!! Now the fun task of coming up with the perfect name begins. As does my girl-inspired shopping. :)

Yeah! A girl! I think Amy Kimberly Robin Terhune has a ring to it . . .

Congrats, Kari!!!! I'm sure it's a relief to know she is doing great!

Hey, that's a wonderful name suggestion, Robin!

Terhune Family said...

Personally, I like "Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder Terhune." What do you think? We could call her "halfpint" for short.

Anon said...

I always love it when people say this about ultrasound pics.

"She looks just like you."

:)

Amy said...

I don't know. "Halfpint" makes me want to ask to what ice cream flavor you're referring. However, I am a huge fan of authors' names--each of my kids is named for an author. Sydney Kaye--Kaye Gibbons. Bryce James--James Whitcomb Riley. Bryan Eugene--Eugene (ARGH! last name left me--he was a playwright--he wrote Long Day's Journey Into Night). Brady Thomas--Dylan Thomas. We wanted to name Bryce after one our 2 favorite authors, but neither Clive Staples Lewis nor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien worked for us. How do you pronounce Reuel anyway? And would you want to be named after office supplies? Well, have fun. And if you nickname this baby "Halfpint," I promise not to counter with "Chunky Monkey." :)

Okay, I'll try again. How about:

Liesl Louisa Brigitta Marta Gretel Terhune?

Or Ken's suggestion:

Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman Terhune?

Jaena said...

Congratulations, Kari! (Brad and family too).

I love my name, but hope you stick with your tradition (so it seems) of using names for your children that are easy to spell AND pronounce. Some of those Bible names can get tricky...

Keetha Broyles said...

I like Keetha Jaena Terhune!!!! And if you don't like that, then what about Jaena Keetha Terhune? ;-)

Terhune Family said...

Yes, we are trying to stick with names that are easy to spell and pronounce - that's the teacher in me! Funny that Ken would mention Dr. Quinn... we were trying to think of names that end in -el and when it could have been a boy, we thought of Michael. We already have lots of Michael's in the family, so that wouldn't have worked. However, now that it's a girl, Mom thought the name Mikayla would be good. Then we still have the Mik(e) part :) I thought of Dr. Quinn.

Amy said...

Are the days of initials spelling words over? Remember RAT? :) I am so glad Rachel's middle name is Lynn, but I have to admit I usually think twice before remembering it...

Terhune Family said...

Daniel's initials are DDT - some day he may know that it's a banned pesticide. We could come up with something unique for the initials. This isn't an initial thing, but I suggested naming her Eva after my grandmother. Then to make it match with RachEL and DaniEL, call her EvEL. Mom didn't like that.

Amy said...

Of course she wouldn't. No grandchild is inherently evil. :) The 'el' thing is kinda cool--not so obvious (like all b's and y's). You mentioned Laura--Laurel would fit the 'el' tradition. Hmm. I need a brain exercise--this may be it. Not that you need my input or anything. :)

Amy said...

Oh--I've been wondering about DDT. Pesticide's the first thing my dad mentioned way back before Daniel was born. Funny. But then they were going to name me Amy Sue. Maybe Dad's hyper-sensitive to those prospects since narrowly escaping that horrendous mistake.

Are you going to pick up the party on Kevin's blog or is this the new hot spot? Of course it's not the same since you're such a gracious and involved host.

Jaena said...

I like the "el" ending trend. Are you sticking with Bible names or does anything go?

There's always Ethel... :)

Jaena said...

you can do and advanced search at this site and get all kinds of ideas:
http://www.babynames.com/Names/search_result.php

My personal favorites from the list...

Hazel: hey, Julia used it

Gretel: and if you have another and he's a boy, you can go with Hansel

Jezebel: biblical that also ends in "el" - perfect!

Ariel: Little Mermaid, anyone?

Mabel: kind of goes with Hazel

Noel: how many kids have a song named after them?

Isabel: OK, I seriously like this name :o)

That's all for now...

Ok, so I'm a little late getting into this conversation. I really like "Amy Kimberley Robin Terhune!" Her initials would be AKRT or if we rearranged them, ARKT or even KART! (That's kinda like Kari T!) :)

Sorry Jaena, but Kari can't use Isabel...that's my favorite. Maybe one day I'll be able to use it. :)

By the way, I'm using my teacher blog name and I'm too lazy to change it....sorry! Now you all can check out where I spend all of my blogging time these days.

I figured I could get in on the discussion on my own blog about my own future child.

We might have to break the -el trend, but I am up for Ariel. Others on the agreed list (shared by Kari and I both) include: Elaine, Anne and Elizabeth (I even Elizabeth's nicknames of Liz and Beth, but not as 'official names').

Terhune Family said...

Actually I had thought of Isabel - I like that name, too. I don't know that Brad would go for it, though. Last night I was thinking of Mary Elizabeth - sounds like something from the Waltons or a name for a nun, though. The initials are MET - too bad we can't come up with a CUB. We'll leave that up to Kim.
Amy, the party is on Kevin's second blog entry, but the conversation is getting a little dull. :)

Katherine Anne Terhune (KAT)--Katie :)

Sarah Anne Terhune (SAT)

Madison Anne Terhune (MAT)--Mikayla, too

Leah Elizabeth Terhune (LET)--kinda goes with Rachel

Cecilia Anne Terhune (CAT)--this was on my list of girl names for Brady (just Cecilia--not Anne or Terhune)

Kiera Anne Terhune (again, KAT)

Neicy Olivia Terhune (NOT)--why not--it's every kid's favorite word anyway

Rebecca Anne Terhune (RAT)--had to work that in :)

Beulah Anne Terhune (BAT)--I double dare ya!

Dotty Olivia Terhune (DOT)--works both ways, unless you see DOT and think Dept of Transportation

Faith Anne Terhune (FAT)--definitely wouldn't recommend this one

Eloise Olivia Terhune (EON)

Georgia Olivia Terhune (GOT)

Hazel Anne Terhune (HAT)--this one's for you, Jaena

Ariel Newell Terhune (ANT)--couldn't resist

I added some spice to Kevin's party.

Look for a name no further! It came to me on my way to work this morning. A name that ends in -el, easy to spell, a classic name, but one that honors Kari's work in Chemistry:

Ethel Methyl Polly Esther Terhune.

DO YOU LOVE IT?!

I also like Ariel Anne Terhune. Somehow it takes me back to the days of Wape De Sep. Of course, so does the name Daniel. Was this just coincidence?

Of course if you really like your initial names, you could always use the names Brad likes: Elizabeth Anne Terhune (EAT).

Terhune Family said...

OK Robin, that was absolutely hilarious! I do love it!!! I will definitely have to share that name with the chem dept at IWU. For the rest of you who have no idea what we're talking about, well, it's a little too complicated to explain other than that it has to do with naming compounds. Too funny.

Terhune Family said...

Amy, I thought "Eugene" in Bryan's name was for your dad...
About some of the other suggestions - Kim Delp's grandmother's name was Hazel and she and her husband Walter were like grandparents to us Newell kids when we were growing up. I used to call them "Walt and Haze." I don't remember this, though.
I have a great Aunt Georgia - Grandma Eva's sister.
Amy, you and Scott Shaw almost had itentical initials - his parents intially named him Aaron Scott Shaw.

Jaena said...

Leave it to Robin to come up with the "perfect" name!

I like some of Amy's too. Aren't you thankful for such helpful friends, Kari?

Amy said...

Yeah--Eugene for my dad. See, our names are complicated. We had to find family names that are also authors' names. The girls names (well, girl's name) starts with 's' and has a 'y.' The boys' names start with 'b' and have 'y' in them. When trying to figure out what to name Brady, we realized we had way too many criteria.

I like EAT. :) I thought of a few more earlier, then Barry told me we were all weird for doing this, and I forgot my names & acronyms. Oh well.

Keetha Broyles said...

I get the Methyl Ethyl Polly Ester name - - - - -

Hey, Hazel was my grandma and she was AWESOME - - - that would be a good name.

Then about the Noel - - - I'd say for a girl to spell it Noelle.

I didn't know you wanted to go with the whole el thing - - - - so I guess my first two name suggestions wouldn't work - - - - but you could ALTER them a bit

Keethel or Jaenel

Hey - - - what about Janelle?

OK - - - - I'm over and out.

WOW! How do I even start to contribute to THIS conversation. Anyway, I will do my best.
Of course I love the
Amy Kimberly Robin Terhune.
The Ethyl Polly etc... name-fabulous! She would be a born genius I'm sure! By the way, congrats on having a girl!
But, I of course love the name Hazel. I know it sounds kind of older, but with the history of that name, you can't go wrong.
Other names I love,
Aubriana, Dinah (prounounced DEENA), Madison, and Bethany.

Keetha Broyles said...

. . . write half a sentence to keep Kevin guessing?

Keri said...

YAY! Congratulations!!!

Okay, it's taken me a while, but I think I've come up with Kevin's baby name:

Kim and Mike said...

Yes, Keetha, we are! Isn't this..

Amy said...

...what was I thinking? Blogger took about 5 minutes to load my comment. Oh--we should start a baby name service for people. Free of charge, of course, since it's so fun.

Keetha Broyles said...

...I'm getting easily cornfused. Remember, I'm rather . . .

Terhune Family said...

Now I have figured out what you guys are doing. I have my comments e-mailed to me...

Terhune Family said...

Robin is very creative with baby names. The chem department loved little Ethel's name.

Terhune Family said...

I have to make a few more comments here so I can catch up in my battle with Kevin.

Terhune Family said...

My laptop refuses to charge and I have to use the really slow computer in the kitchen, so I haven't kept up with all this commenting. Poor me, I know.

Robin said...

Robin's my name, baby-naming is my game. Just not my own.

The thing I really want to know though is . . .

Terhune Family said...

...what he thinks of all these suggestions. :)

Keetha Broyles said...

I thought of another chem related name for you, Kari - - - -

Poly Ester Terhune.

Keetha Broyles said...

And then we could all keep reminding you she's your little PET!!!!

Kim and Mike said...

I'll leave a comment here, too, so that you can be caught up on comments with Kevin. Hopefully tomorrow I'll post some pictures of the fun that Rachel and I are having at my house. :)

Keetha Broyles said...

Oh Kim, PLEASE DO POST pictures - - - - I'm WAITING for new 'stuff!'

Rachel is at your house? SOMEONE has forgotten to TELL us that!!! ;-)

jenny marvin mealy said...

Okay so I got whiplash trying to get caught up on things-you guys are all nuts!!

The name for this child must of course include in some form the name of the grand mothers favorite daughter-which we all know is me! So just get it in your head now that somewhere in the name Jennifer and or Ellen must be included!

What can you brilliant namers do with that?

Robin said...

The only thing I can come up with with Jennifer and Ellen is:

Jellen. No. Reminds me of a sole insert commercial.
Ellifer. Again no. Reminds me of a hairy pachyderm.

Hope you're enjoying your pseudovacation. Has Ethel Methyl been enjoying herself? (Come on, you can hear yourself calling her that, can't you?)

Keetha Broyles said...

Or - - - we could just be straight forward - - - Jennifer Ellen Terhune, little JET!!!

I still like Poly Ester.

Terhune Family said...

Baby Ethel is enjoying her space for the time being. Unfortunately for her, her space is limited and getting smaller every day. She is moving so much that I can see it now. Poor Daniel tries to sit on me and slides off. So he tries it again... and again... and again. Try explaining to a 17 month old that he shouldn't squish the baby.

Robin said...

Poor Daniel. He has no idea that lack of lap room is just the beginning.

But I DO like the fact that you called the baby "Ethel." Have we decided on this -el name that is both a classic and chemistry related? Or are you just toying with my emotions?

Terhune Family said...

Just toying with your emotions. :) Juanita Higley said today that she had never thought of Ethel as a chemistry related name.

Robin said...

It would be our little secret. She'd get to high school chemistry and think, "Wait a second. . ."

In all honesty, Ken said he likes the name Ethel. We think it's going to have a real comeback in the next few years, and you could set the trend!

You could even give it a more modern spin: Ethylene!

Amy said...

I guess I'm out of the naming game since chemical compounds isn't my thing. Wasn't Ethel Lucy's sidekick?
