The First Soccer Game

Rachel had her first Upwards Soccer game on Saturday. I took a couple of pictures and then got drawn in - cheering and all that other stuff. It was a good game and Rachel's team won. Rachel and I have already played soccer two other days on the City Hall lawn. One with Daniel and the other with Rachel's friend Bryce.

Easter pics

Finally, here they are! Brad was in Florida and Mom and Dad were in NY, so it was the four of us for Easter (and Jack).

We've adopted!

Well, I tried to turn on the poor, clean digital camera, but I think it's dead. This is the same camera that we bought in November while waiting at Best Buy for the release of my computer that they were holding hostage. This is also the same camera that Daniel threw across the room awhile back, breaking the zoom feature. Thankfully, we still have our original digital camera, so I can post our first pictures of our new pet! I was going to announce that we were expecting (a cat), but I forgot. Here's Stewart - adopted from my friend Tish's son Noah. They're moving and couldn't keep him. Clay was over for a few minutes and tried to befriend our nervous kitty. Stewart spent the rest of the evening hiding his face, and then he spent the night (and all day, so far) under our bed!

Expensive day

It's been an expensive day. We got back LATE last night from NC to a very messy house. Daniel didn't help much - he mixed the flour and sugar together all over the counter, floor, and in the canisters themselves. Then he decided to wash the few dishes that were in the sink, and he added our new camera to the wash water!!!!

For Jaena

I was just reading comments on Kim's blog about what she's having. Of course, I say she's having a BABY; therefore, I win the contest and get to hold my neicephew first!

Jaena commented that the "Are you having heartburn?" questions really don't mean anything about the baby's gender - they're just old wives' tales. That's a good thing, since I had heartburn with all three of mine, and I have two girls and a boy! Toward the end of my last pregnancy, I read an article in one of those baby magazines that are always in abundance at the doctor's office. The article said that Johns Hopkins University had done a study to disprove the "old wives' tale" that having heartburn means that the baby will have hair. I was particularly interested in this topic, since all of my babies had significant amounts of hair and I had significant amounts of heartburn (what is the maximum dose of Tums allowed, anyway?). I never quite understood how the baby's hair could cause heartburn since the baby has a separate sack and doesn't come into contact with my digestive system at all.

Side note: My very caring mother asked me one day what I was doing in my medicine closet (yes, we have enough medicine for a closet), and I replied that I was getting Tums. She asked very sweetly if I was having heartburn. When I said that I was, she said, "Good!" because I gave her lots of heartburn. I was the only baby who gave her heartburn and I was the only baby with hair (which means I was also the most beautiful baby, Kevin).

Back to the article... This study was begun to disprove the link between heartburn and babies' hair, but it actually proved it! Evidently, the hormone that causes hair growth in babies, also causes heartburn in mothers. How cool. Or would that be hot, since it's heartburn?

Bonanza and Bouncing Trains

Daniel likes to listen to and sing along with the theme songs to both Bonanza and JAG. Everyone in the room is required to "dance" to the theme songs as well. Here we have Daniel, Thomas and Friends singing and "dancing" to Bonanza.

On a side note, Harold the Helicopter and Thomas the Tank Engine have been getting into trouble, according to Daniel. Last night, Harold had to sit in time out for hitting Trevor the traction engine and then Thomas hit Harold twice. This all happened after Daniel had to sit in time out for hitting Rachel. Just coincidence, I'm sure. Enjoy the video!

A Little Math Distraction

My extended family and I have been playing with an e-mail that was going around with a math problem regarding girls, backpacks and cats. Maybe you've seen it... I have a math problem of my own.

Yesterday, I was making sugar cookies, which called for 1 cup of oil and 4 cups of flour, among other things. I used up all of my oil. Meanwhile, Daniel decided to start "washing the dishes," which means playing with all the dishes and getting water everywhere. In the process of adding the rest of the ingredients, I realized I had added an extra cup of flour. I tasted the dough (why else do I make cookies but to eat the dough?) and it was indeed too flour-y.

What to do? Hmmmm... I'm out of oil... I found some olive oil - half a cup. So, here are some possible questions... What was the limiting reagent in my cookie recipe? (That would be for the first year chemistry student.) How much more flour (and other ingredients, if I had listed them) do I need to add to make the cookies taste right?

Those are some valid questions. However, the questions I want answered are these: How many cookie dough balls did Daniel eat while I was on the phone? How much time did it take me to clean up the mess that Daniel made while I was making cookies?

One note about Daniel eating cookie dough balls... When I started to squish the balls with a glass dipped in sugar (with Daniel's help, of course), Daniel pointed to the spot where a ball had been and asked, "Where'd it go?" This is a game we like to play with things that Daniel hides. I said, "I don't know... where's it go?" At this point, usually he pulls it out from behind his back and says, "There it is!" This time, however, he said with a sheepish smile, "In my mouth!"
